Who wouldn’t want more people to find their website? We’ve all heard of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) but how can you improve your SEO rating if you aren’t an experienced coder? This is when you may need to get some help making sure your site is optimized. But the good news is – if you have an OfferingTree website, many SEO best practices are already built-in! Let’s take a look at some SEO tips for small businesses in this blog post.
So what is SEO?
In a nutshell, SEO is how high your website ranks in search results. And you want to rank as high as you can in those search results, because if your website consistently shows up when people are searching for an offering like yours in your locality, there’s a good chance they will visit your business.
How to Improve your SEO
You don’t need to be an SEO ninja to work the system well but what you do need is some good information and a commitment to quality content. Below we are going to list some straight forward steps you can take to improve your search engine performance but before we do, remember that doing some of these steps is better than ignoring SEO altogether. It might not be feasible to achieve all of them, but every step you take is progress!
1. Create Valuable Content
Search engines employ crawlers, which are computer programs that read and analyze web pages from the entire world wide web. They used to be fairly basic, and savvy web developers could use coding tricks to fool the web crawler and increase search engine rankings. Today, web crawlers have become much more sophisticated and are using artificial intelligence to determine the authenticity and value of the content on a web site.
One of the most important factors in ranking the page is the value of the content. Blogging is one great way to do this. Whatever your area of expertise, blog about it. Share your knowledge and experience. Provide a reason why a prospective student or client would want to work with you. This will build trust and authority, which will hopefully encourage them to sign up for your offerings at the same time as getting your blog picked up by the web crawlers.
You don’t have to blog daily or even weekly. Just be consistent so you can keep your audience engaged and the search crawlers interested.
2. Share links to your site
The number of links from other sites that directly link to your website is also important, so:
- Don’t shy away from about telling the world about your website. Make sure you have a link to your site on your social media sites (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Pinterest, etc).
- You should also create business listings with a link back to your site on high-quality business listing websites such as Manta, LinkedIn, Hotfrog, Angi, and Google business listings.
- You can also try to increase links to your site through forums like Reddit and Quora. When you provide value in an answer or conversation, put your link at the end of your response. People won’t mind the small plug if you are a contributing and helpful member in the forum.
- If you have videos on Youtube, make sure to fill in the title and details section while in the video editor. Include a link to your site and make sure the description accurately describes the content of the video.
3. Become an authority
Share your knowledge, experience and wisdom with other sites or groups that have a large following. There are blogs and expert sites that accept external contributions. This is a good way to get more exposure and to become an authority on your area of expertise whether that’s health, fitness, or wellness.
You can also build your authority by appearing on podcasts to talk about your business and build your brand, which can increase awareness about your work as well as traffic to your website. And finally, collaborating with other professionals to guest write blog posts is another great technique to increase your exposure and build your expert status.
4. Make sure your website is mobile responsive
The vast majority of us search the web on our mobile devices so taking a look at how your website shows up on a mobile phone is really, really important. So important that it actually affects your SEO ranking – Google increased the importance of having a mobile responsive website in their ranking algorithm back in 2015. In fact, if you have both a mobile version and a desktop version of your website, Google will default to the mobile version for indexing purposes. Thus, it is very important that your website works and looks good on all mobile devices.
5. Make sure your website is optimized for fast loading
This is an often-overlooked SEO factor, but one that Google has admitted has a positive effect on rankings. Not only is this important for SEO, but the longer it takes for your site to load, the more abandonment you’ll get from some users. You worked hard to get them to click on your site URL, try not to lose them before they take a look. Web site optimization is beyond the scope of this article, but you can use free online tools like Pigdom which will analyze your site and provide recommendations on how to improve loading speed.
