Best website builder for studios that run classes

What's the difference between a website builder and studio management software?

‍

A website builder makes pages for a variety of different kinds of businesses, meaning they may not always have the exact functionality a studio needs. Studio management software runs your class schedule, payments, and client records, and sometimes includes a website (but not always without extra fees).

Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy, and Yola started as page builders and later added booking. Studio software like OfferingTree or Mindbody starts from the schedule.

Do you actually need a website builder, or software that includes a website?

If you have a site you like, keep it and add booking that fits into it (more on that below).

If you don't have a site yet, watch out for accidentally paying for two tools. A $17 or $19 plan often can't take a class booking without an upgrade or a second subscription.

If you don't love your site, check whether the real problem is the schedule page. That will help you decide on a solution.

What does a studio website really cost per month once booking works?

Squarespace Basic ($19) adds a 2% fee on site sales, so most studios use Core. Acuity's $16 Starter plan doesn't include memberships or packages, and Squarespace's scheduling page notes that Acuity uses its own payment processors.

OfferingTree Essentials is $26/month with a 2.9% transaction fee. Pro drops the fee for $23 more, so it's the cheaper plan once you sell more than about $800 a month. Studio Starter costs more than Squarespace plus Acuity, and covers staff schedules, check-in, memberships, email, and your site in one account.

GoDaddy's appointments plan ($14.99/month the first year, then $21.99) has no class packs, memberships, or waitlists. Mindbody lists a starting price of $79/month per location, with a website included.

Is Wix or Squarespace better for a fitness or yoga studio?

‍

Wix, if you want the class schedule inside your site on one subscription. You'll need Core, since the $17 Light plan doesn't include scheduling. Squarespace, if design matters more to you than booking and you're comfortable running Acuity alongside it.

Squarespace's templates are cleaner, and many yoga studios love that look, but students book in an Acuity window with a separate account. Wix skips that step. Its booking tools serve all kinds of service businesses, though, so test your real class schedule on your phone before paying for a year. Can Squarespace handle class packs, memberships and waitlists?

What breaks when you embed a schedule in a website builder?

Embeds work, but three problems come up:

It doesn't look like your site: The widget is another company's design, it may really look out of place.

Students leave your site to book: For one of our clients, the login was the dealbreaker:

Your records split: Purchases live in the scheduler and newsletter signups live in the builder, so emailing everyone whose 10-class pack runs out becomes a spreadsheet job.

Can you keep your existing website and add booking to it?

Yes, and if you like your site, start there.

Redirect the rest - Set up a 301 redirect from every old page to its closest match.
Keep your domain - Test the new site on its temporary address, then switch the domain on launch day.
Move in a quiet month - Not January or September, when intro offers and back-to-school signups need the site working.

Expect a few weeks of small ups and downs while Google catches up. Before you switch, open your new schedule on your phone, pick next Tuesday's 6pm class, and book it as a student would to see the full client experience.
